I was recently asked by a Japanese game developer why first-person shooters are so popular in America. Don't we get bored of doing the same thing over and over? At the time I was at a loss for an explanation, but after playing Call of Duty 3 I can answer that question. We don't mind playing scores of shooters because month after month we're presented with games in the genre that up the ante in terms of presentation, mechanics, and overall quality. For example, only a year after Treyarch brought us Call of Duty 2: Big Red One, they're back with another installment in the series. They've added enough to the successful Call of Duty formula that we were happy to once again join the battle for the free world.

Whereas "Call of Duty 2" did an incredible job creating the illusion of an open environment, it's just the reverse here. You feel hemmed in and herded along at every turn, and the pacing also reflects that. Unless you rush forward, progress in the game grinds to a halt -- no considered approaches or tactical positioning, just advance and keep firing.

Not likely to win any new fans to the series but seasoned players should be satisfied. [Issue 14, p.94]

So if you're looking for an all-out melee, then Call of Duty 3 is your game. If you want something that's somewhat stealth mission-based, then you might want to give "SOCOM U.S. Navy SEALs: Combined Assault" a whirl.

The control method is interesting, if not slightly flawed and the audio capabilities of the Wii do more than an adequate job of immersing us into the single player campaign. If you are lucky enough to own both an Wii and an Xbox 360 then we still recommended you opt for the latter as the graphics, tried and tested controls and online capabilities are more adequate for this particular game.

Neither revolutionary nor even remarkable when viewed as part of its franchise, but for fans of WW2 action or first-person shooters, there's a lot to love here, particularly in multiplayer.

Not quite a classic, then, but Call of Duty 3 can justifiably call itself the best shooter on PS3. Over to you, then "Killzone." [Apr 2007, p.90]

Call of Duty 3’s unique ideas aren’t enough to separate it from the rest of the pack and it doesn’t maintain the incredibly high standards set at the start of the game.

Treyarch has done an amazing job with this game and has quite possibly constructed one of the best online experiences currently available anywhere.

Grabs you by the collar and keeps delivering. Up there with "Killzone" and "Black" for best FPS on PS2. [Christmas 2006, p.64]
