A game to capture the heart of anyone who loves superhero culture, either good side or bad. The writing evolved wonderfully over its many years, and spent the last half decade really pushing the bar for enjoyable PVE gameplay, near infinite customization of your hero/villain avatar, and offered gripping storylines that really did wake up the sense that there's more to a game than just loot: Sometimes, doing the right thing is its own reward.

The community is second to none, even now that the game is cancelled well before its time. We can only hope it will be picked up by another developer somehow, but NCSoft's steep overpricing of the game ($8M in stated value, asking $80M from any buyer to prevent interest) and diligent efforts to squash any memory of COH makes this difficult.

But as I said, the game inspires heroism. Watch Facebook for all the post-COH communities, working to make their spiritual successors or using the current EXEs in ways that keep the hope alive.

Excelsior, Paragon Studios. You made a winner here that was ended far before its time was due.

Paragon City is in trouble. And I was just the man to help... well, woman sometimes, but that's another story. It's been a month since City of Heroes was released to store shelves and I can firmly say that I still really like this game. That isn't to say that it doesn't need some improvements in certain areas, but what Cryptic has created here is nothing less than one of the most exciting MMOs that I've ever played with the coolest premise.

A bit like last year's "PlanetSide" in the sense that it isn't afraid to offer fewer things to do while making sure that you have more fun doing them. [Aug 2004, p.66]

This is really one of the first MMOs that really allow casual players the chance to play and have a good time without feeling like they're being left behind. The wonderful sidekick system helps as does the extraordinary ease of finding a team to play with.

If you can handle being a second-tier hero fighting street gangs for a little while with the promise of future superhero glory to motivate you, then by all means pull on some tights and hit the streets of Paragon City.

It's a refreshingly focused online role-playing experience, and is an entertaining, polished game that, unlike so many others, manages to deliver on the underlying promise of an excellent concept.

Even if you only play CoH for the duration of the first free month, it's well worth the purchase. Chances are you'll be sticking around, though. [July 2004, p.75]

Massive character creation tools, diverse city landscapes, powerful abilities and enemies, huge groups of powerful heroes fighting alongside each other and the list goes on and on showing this massively multiplayer game is not like so many out there.

Anyone new to the genre can certainly make this a choice without expecting to get in too deep and losing their way, while seasoned MMORPGers can have a blast playing out their superhero dreams.

But as a longtime player of MMORPGs myself, I love being able to log on for fifteen minutes and actually get a feeling of progress at any level. It is about time MMORPGs started to look at themselves as games, not time sinks.
