Donkey Kong Country is a platform game where players must complete 40 different side-scrolling levels and recover the Kongs' banana hoard, which has been stolen by the Kremlings. Each level is uniquely themed and consists of varying tasks such as swimming, riding in mine carts, launching out of barrel cannons, or swinging from vine to vine. Players lose a life if they get hit by any enemy or fall off the screen. To defeat an enemy, players can either execute a roll, jump or groundslam. However, some enemies cannot be taken down like this, so the player must throw a barrel or use the assistance of an animal. Enemies vary in difficulty, usually becoming tougher to take down as the game progresses. When the player has lost all their lives, the game is over. However, the player can gain additional lives by collecting items scattered throughout the levels, including bananas; golden letters that spell out K–O–N–G; extra life balloons; and golden animal tokens that lead to bonus levels. There are also many secret passages that can lead to bonus games where the player can earn additional lives or other items. Players of Donkey Kong Country control one of two characters: Donkey Kong or his nephew Diddy.

The Super was in trouble. It was 1994, and Nintendo's second home console had been on the market for three years. Three years marked by competition, heated rivalries against opposing companies on a scale that the Big N had never experienced before. Nintendo needed a hit. With its audience drained first by Sega's Genesis and, then, by Sony's brand-new PlayStation, Nintendo needed a blockbuster game to grab gamers' attention again. Donkey Kong Country was it. Donkey Kong Country saved the Super.

Fun though DKC is, it is - as many have said in the past - rather on the short side. Stumbling through the game with a fairly good idea of where everything was, it took us about four hours to get to the final boss and dispatch him, picking up some 70 per cent of the game's secrets along the way.

On GBA, the second verse is the same as the first -- just a little bit smaller and it seems a bit worse.

First-time platform gamers will enjoy this, but veterans expecting a perfect port may feel a little cheated at first.

As I got more into it, the game hooked me more with deeper, more challenging levels. It also has me coming back trying to find all the bonus levels and scrapbook shots. Another great platformer for the GBA.

Despite a distinct lack of impressive new features, Donkey Kong Country is nonetheless an enjoyable platform game offering around 10-15 hours of play (expect to devote even more time to get a 101% completion rate) and generally pleasing visuals and sound even if they aren't up to the level of the Super NES version.

Though not quite a substitute for the SNES version, DKC is still higher quality than 90 percent of the GBA's action lineup right now.

The standards are accounted for: jumping, things to collect, different environment, secrets to find and bosses to defeat. But jumpin? monkeys is this game hard!

Blasting out of barrels, hopping onto the backs of wild animals, and swinging from vines never gets old. [July 2003, p.52]

Though some of the graphics have been given a downgrade and the soundtrack itself is a bit lacking, the overall quality of the game hasn't changed a bit.
