Featured for the very first time is the introduction of the series' most difficult mode. In Nightmare, make sure to have transferred a previous save file from Musou 7 as a higher level is a definite necessity. As well, new playable characters make an appearance such as Guo Jia and Wang Yi - Musou favorite Pang De also makes a comeback. Characters can now reach the new rank of General, and on the way, experience a new move set such as diving and shadow sprinting into the foray. Additional weapons have been added with modified stats that offer extra bonuses and slots for character customization. For online, there are new modes and missions for conquest, and a challenge mode for those who have the desire to be the world's best Musou player on global leaderboards. With plenty of reasons to return to the battlefield as one versus many.

If you've already beaten the original Dynasty Warriors 8: Xtreme Legends, there isn’t enough new here to revisit, but if you haven't played it yet, it's certainly better than the original version. It took me roughly 60 hours to beat the main campaign excluding most side-quests. Dynasty Warriors 8: Xtreme Legends is best suited for newcomers to the franchise. If you keep your expectations reasonable before you jump in, then you can easily enjoy yourself.

Like I mentioned at the start of this review, I had to update last year’s verdict to take into account this PlayStation 4 release. As it stands, Dynasty Warriors 8: Xtreme Legends Complete Edition is one of the most feature-rich entries in the history of the franchise, and has come out at a perfect time to pick up newcomers who are looking for fun games to play on their lacking PlayStation 4 library. Haters will forever hate the series, and this game doesn’t do anything to change that, as it’s after its fans, and for those fans, you’re going to love Dynasty Warriors 8: Xtreme Legends Complete Edition, as it’s jammed with hours upon hours of content that once again improves on the series’ formula and pushes it towards its prime.

While Dynasty Warriors 8: Xtreme Legends Complete Edition isn’t a bad game by any means, it’s once again another venture into the same game you’ve played last year. If you already have it on the PS3 or PS Vita, then you don’t even need to give this one a look. If the PS4 is your only system and you are a diehard fan of the DW games then this might be one for you. Otherwise, this is another button masher that is fun for a while but will end up on the shelf with all of the other DW games collecting dust before you know it. Maybe Tecmo Koei should rethink the core design in the next game as, at this point, they are getting stale.

Dynasty Warriors 8: Xtreme Legends has the 30+ hours of the original and adds even more to it. Sure, it has some mindless game play at times, but it’s still a rather fun time. Ambition mode has even more to do, and if you don’t mind grinding…a lot, it can offer up even more customization. The PS4 version is the one to get, with its updated visuals and ability to render as many enemies on screen as it does. Dynasty Warriors fans will have their fun here, and people who missed out on the original release will have a ton to play through while having some mindless fun.

If you haven't played a Dynasty Warriors game in a long while, picking up Xtreme Legends on your shiny new PS4 isn't a bad idea. It doesn't offer up anything mind-blowing that demands the attention of casual fans, but as a complete package it's a wonderful entry point.

So once again, I can only recommend Dynasty Warriors Xtreme Legends 8 to people who haven’t yet bought the original Dynasty Warriors 8 but this creates a weird situation. As I said before, the Dynasty Warriors formula really hasn’t changed and at this point really only appeals to die-hard Dynasty Warriors fans. As such, most die-hard fans will have already picked up the original Dynasty Warriors 8. So one has to wonder, who is Xtreme Legends 8 actually marketed for? The best answer that we can come up with is Lu Bu fanatics, and you’d be surprised how many of those actually exist.

I can't get enough of Dynasty Warriors games, and Xtreme Legends is immediately my favourite PlayStation 4 game. The sheer weight of content that is packed into the game can't be understated; this is a big, chunky game that demands a lot of time to work all the way through it, but every step of the way is a truly entertaining one.

Xtreme Legends on PlayStation 4 together with Dynasty Warriors 8. Same fun, revised graphics.

As with most Dynasty Warriors games, you either love it or hate it, and you know which way you swing by now. If you love it, this is a most definite yes from a fellow fan. If you hate it ... well, you are an object of pity in mine heart.

Not much has changed, but the consistency of the Dynasty Warriors franchise holds true in spades with Dynasty Warriors 8: Xtreme Legends Complete Edition. Extra content and a lower new-game cost accentuates a gratifying experience that's filled with content that Dynasty Warriors fans have grown to love.
