Icewind Dale II expands upon gameplay elements found in Icewind Dale, offering players the ability to hone their combat skills and achieve even more powerful possessions, spells, and experience. Icewind Dale II hosts a large variety of new weapons, armor and magical items and features all the spells from Icewind Dale and its expansion Icewind Dale(tm): Heart of Winter(tm). Additionally, Icewind Dale II includes over 50 new spells such as Executioner's Eyes and Aegis, bringing the total to over 300 spells. In addition, over 100 new special items can be found in Icewind Dale II's elevated Heart of Fury mode, first introduced in Icewind Dale: Heart of Winter. This challenging mode enhances the game's replayability by allowing players to face intensely difficult and strategic battles with their high level, battle-hardened characters.

For those of you who didn't catch the original IWD, it's a Black Isle Studios' fantasy-based CRPG (computerized roleplaying game) that uses the 2D Infinity Engine, like the extremely popular Baldur's Gate series and Planescape: Torment. IWD and its freshly hatched sibling differ from the other IE-based games in several respects. First, you create your entire party of six, rather than finding and adding NPCs to it. Second, both IWD games are relentlessly linear, moving from one major quest to the next. You can't pick and choose among a variety of major but nonessential quests. You can choose between different sides in a few secondary IWD2 conflicts, but not to the extent that the Fallout series or Arcanum allows you to pursue two completely separate tracks of good and evil to win.

Despite moving to Dungeons & Dragons Third Edition rules, the game seemed much too familiar, it didn?t look particularly good or run particularly well on my computer, and it didn?t even come close to capturing my imagination.

With some nifty tweaks to the engine, A-class writing, and a dazzling implementation of the D&D 3rd Edition rules, ID II is like hauling out yesterday's burrito casserole and realizing that it tastes even better reheated. [Oct 2002, p.87]

It lures you from one challenge to the next, and just when you think ah ha, I've finished the game, a quietly compelling little voice asks whether you might have even more fun restarting the thing with a completely different party.

A joy to look at. It features stunning graphics, terrific audio and a rich storyline.

Every bit as good as you?d hope... If any criticism can be found with Icewind Dale II, it's that it may be more than a little inaccessible to the non-"hardcore" role-player.

Immersed in a good story, slicing enemies, completing quests, advancing you group's experience, are all elements that will keep you going in Icewind Dale 2 and they represent game's essential qualities. These features are all well-balanced and can guarantee some long hours of fun RPG fun.

This game will definitely have you saying ?just one more battle? deep into the night (or early morning), and fans of the original Icewind Dale can definitely expect more of the same hack-n-slash-y goodness from the sequel.

Designed for RPG veterans and particularly those familiar with Dungeons & Dragons. The game comes with an excellent and thorough manual, but at well over 100 pages it might be overwhelming to a newbie.

So the engine is clunky and the pathfinding is bad. Ultimately that doesn't matter much. This is a great RPG.
