Portal? is a new single player game from Valve. Set in the mysterious Aperture Science Laboratories, Portal has been called one of the most innovative new games on the horizon and will offer gamers hours of unique gameplay. The game is designed to change the way players approach, manipulate, and surmise the possibilities in a given environment; similar to how Half-Life® 2?s Gravity Gun innovated new ways to leverage an object in any given situation. Players must solve physical puzzles and challenges by opening portals to maneuvering objects, and themselves, through space.

An fps that blows your mind.. Recommended

Open a portal on the floor close to an out-of-reach ledge you want to get to. Open another portal in a location where you have a height advantage – leap into the 2nd portal and your downward momentum as you enter the portal translates to upward momentum from the first portal, which flings you toward the out-of-reach ledge. As strange as it may sound, many sections feel like some kind of evolved platformer. Items like blocks, rockets, turrets, and the “weighted companion cube” can also pass through portals and in fact many of the challenges require some creative use of these objects – sometimes it’s not just good enough that you get yourself by an obstacle.

When all is said and done, Portal will leave you wanting more, but that's not a bad thing. It's a hilarious game that offers a completely unique first-person experience and forces players to use their brains rather than their blasters.

So Portal does its job within the Orange Box compilation, taking a brilliant left-field idea and successfully merging it with Valve's universe over an entertaining few hours of gaming. And in its own right the game lives on a little longer in the taxing Bonus Maps and the Achievement targets that will no doubt prove furiously addictive to those with the requisite gaming genes. Disappointment that the puzzles are not as labyrinthine and mind-bending as the original trailer suggested they might be, and that this is perhaps not the definitive exploitation of such a wonderful game mechanic, should be tempered with the knowledge that once the experiment is complete, there actually looks to be more life (or should that be half-life?) in Portal than we might ever have imagined.

Portal was a great experience and I look forward to more from the team. I definitely want cake after finishing this game and you'll know why once you do.

The simple ideas are often the best, and Portal, quite simply, is one of the best ideas for a game we've ever seen. It's fantastically realised, brilliantly executed, and had me wrapped around its computerised finger for two-and-a-half unforgettable hours.

The portal gun is the most exciting thing to happen to FPS games since the gravity gun, and it's no surprise to discover that Valve is agonising over whether to give it to Gordon Freeman. Its function is simple: bridging gaps. But, in doing so, it alters the way in which you approach an FPS environment so radically that it's hard to think past it.

With delightfully unique gameplay and fantastically witty writing, Portal is a huge success.

For 20 dollars, it may be a little pricey for what’s there, but we certainly won't tell anybody not to buy Portal. We recommend picking this one up with the full Orange Box because it’s hard to say no to another peek into this awesome universe and it does fit together with Episode Two.

This is the funniest game I've played since Psychonauts.
