One year after the climatic events of Tales of Xillia in which the two worlds, Rieze Maxia and Elympios, were united by the destruction of the barrier that separated the two worlds. Elympios is a modern nation with a high level of technological advancement gained through the use of spyrix, whereas Rieze Maxia is a previously isolated land which relies on spirit artes and nature. While both worlds work towards peace together, there are still numerous clashes due to cultural differences and it will be some time before true peace is achieved. Jude, Milla and the cast of the original Tales of Xillia from Rieze Maxia now strive to live their lives and fi ght for peace in this newly reunited world. Tales of Xillia 2 centers around Ludger Kresnik, a young man and a skilled chef who lives in Trigleph city in Elympios with his brother Julius and their cat Rollo. He strives to follow in his brother's footsteps and work as an agent in the prestigious Spirius Corporation, a large scale and illustrious company that develops technology for every fi eld imaginable. One day, through a chance encounter, he meets Elle Marta: a young girl travelling alone attempting to reunite with her father at the mythic "Land of Canaan" and ends up accompanying her. His choice to accompany her will send the two on a journey that will change the fate of the two worlds forever.

A Japanese style RPG with fast'n'furious real-time combat. There's a lot of stuff to do and nothing deviates too much from the tried and tested Tales of -formula. Maybe it should, though. [Nov 2014]

The combat system is one of the best features of the series. It has nothing to do with the classic turn-based battles and resemble three-dimensional team fighting. Heroes are free to move around the battlefield, they know how to put the blocks, dodge, and not only execute fierce battle tricks but carrying out deadly team combos. All this looks very spectacular and saves from the boredom in those frequent moments when player runs out of desire for more grinding. Unfortunately local grind is a must – without it one never will be able to kill some bosses. [Nov 2014, p.106]

I haven’t seen such an interesting combat system in any other jRPG game. Who would’ve thought that I would await the next game of the Tales series more eagerly than the next Final Fantasy? [Nov 2014, p.72]

It's a good JRPG but not a great one. [Issue#249, p.72]

Tales of Xillia 2 had the potential to be one of the best games in the franchise. While it hits many notes perfectly, it also gets some things terribly wrong.

A game that's bloated beyond necessity, thanks to a terrible design decision, Tales of Xillia 2 does a few things to address the flaws of the first title—and then completely runs that progress into a brick wall. Multiple times.

Rough around the edges, but a charming sequel nonetheless

Tales of Xillia 2 feels like not much more than a repeat of the previous game. You'll spend most of your time walking through familiar environments you already explored thoroughly in the previous game.
