The original Tomb Raider on the PlayStation prided itself on its fully 3D world of ancient puzzles, so it's a little odd to have a continuation of that series on a 3D capable system that roots its design into a hybrid 2D engine. The design created for the Nintendo DS has the spirit of the console game and some of its charm, sure. But it definitely hasn't received the same kind of attention that the series received on the PlayStation 2, Xbox, and the rest, as it's very rough around the edges and just isn't quite a good enough supplement or replacement for the real Tomb Raider: Legend adventure.

While it’s not a radically new direction for the series, the return to the familiar elements that made this series such a joy are back and the action-packed moments scattered throughout make this a game fans will definitely enjoy.

Where Legend is successful is in capturing the charm and feel of the original games and truly feels like the first modern take on the series.

With a renewed focus on adventure and the inclusion of a less restrictive control scheme, Crystal Dynamics has managed to rekindle the fading flame of the Tomb Raider franchise. Although it is a bit on the short side, a multitude of extras and the tough Time Trial mode will extends the Croft experience.

A good game worth your investment of time, although I would weigh the option of renting over buying mainly because of the games length.

The improved graphics make all of the environments you visit look lively and beautiful, both in and out of the jungle and in and out of water. Lighting and shadows are done quite well and provide a very noticeable visual improvement over the last few games as is the audio.

What it does have is quality rather than quantity though and the excellent Croft Manor level will add hours of fun to the value.

While the gameplay is serviceable, fun and current, the art design and visual production are head and shoulders above similar games in many respects.

It's fairly obvious that Legend game wasn't designed for the 360, but even against the best action adventures of recent times (like "God of War" or the "Prince of Persia" trilogy) it falls some way short of matching the standard we've become accustomed to in recent years - both on a gameplay and on a technical level.

So Legend on the 360 remains an 8.0, just like the Xbox version--there's no other game that gives you quite the rush that Tomb Raider has in the past and does now with Legend. [Jun 2006, p.85]
