Greed Corp is the latest game in the turn based strategy genre, a genre which has long since been misrepresented by poor performing titles since its heyday of the 1990’s. Greed Corp brings you into the world of Mistbound a once thriving world destroyed by natural disasters, corruption, and most of all greed for the last remaining resource rich areas. It would seem that the industrial revolution did more harm then good to Mistbound and its once lush green hills and snowy mountains. Even the barren deserts and murky wetlands have become desolate places only good for resource harvesting.
Mistbound, in all of its hexagonal goodness is a striking site to lay eyes on. The landscape’s design may only be sparsely placed hexagons, but the detail that are established in them are incredible. Land textures are detailed and vary from region to region. The column like rocky structures rising out of the sky will make any mountain climber uneasy. Destroying and decimating land is a fun feat to watch as these mighty columns crumble under your foes feet, or your own if you don’t watch the movements of your enemies or your own activities. Surrounding the magnificent sky defying land forms are wispy clouds, eerie fog, or the darkness of the night. This small addition to the world of Mistbound adds the perfect essence for a world in convolution.
Fighting over what remains of the resources in Mistbound are four remaining corporations; The Freemen, The Pirates, The Cartel, and The Empire. Each of the four corporations has a distinct look and feel that gives off a diverse personality and representation of there background. The Freemen for instance are what could be considered the Sierra Club of Mistbound and their contraptions are reminiscent of the Flapper-Wing-a-Ma-Thing from Once Upon a Forest. Going through the singleplayer side of Greed Corp will first take you through the Freemen campaign, then the Pirates, then the Cartel, and then finally the Empire.
In each level of the campaigns the goal is simple, build up your resources and overtake the competition before they can destroy what is left of the land or you. Just like any turn based strategy game you are limited in what you can do per turn, the variety offered in Greed Corp however is refreshing for the genre. In Greed Corp you are both benefited and penalized for your own greed on the land. Several times levels were won or lost because of intelligent strategic thinking planned out over the course of several turns; needless to say trial and error will play a big role as you progress onward through the campaigns, expect frustrations as a normal part of gameplay, it will only make you want to play more to try to outsmart your opponent on the next play through. At the start of each turn your harvesters will go to work beating what they can out of the land. Every time a harvester goes to work the ground it works on and the land surrounding will be degraded one level and credits earned. These credits in-turn can be used to build more harvesters, canons, ammo for the canons, and armories. With the creation of an armory you can construct walkers, which resemble a MechWarrior and carriers to fly the walkers from detached land areas to other areas across the level. The AI in Greed Corp is smart and will take advantage of your mistakes and misfortunes; intellectual challenge is in attendance and makes for great random gameplay.
The sounds of Mistbound and Greed Corp are another great addition to this game, as you conquer land you can hear the industrial machinery in motion as if you were in the middle of a manufacturing center or construction site synonymous with the industrial revolution. The movements of your walkers, carriers, and firing of your canons coupled with all of the other minute sounds present in Greed Corp compliment the greed and destruction to be had in the visuals and gameplay. The game’s soundtrack is a pleasant addition as well; smooth Jazz and classical Piano will help you flow through the game and stay motivated to continue playing, until it stops of course. Unfortunately as great as the game’s music is, the music will just go off after a song plays out and nothing can be heard for what seems like ages, this can make the turns and waiting of turns feel even longer and they begin to become boring until the music feels like starting back up. With no option to play custom music on the PlayStation XMB be ready for some dull moments, hopefully the destruction of the land and howling of the wolves at night can keep you awake during this one major downside to Greed Corp.
Greed Corp takes all of the thrills of the singleplayer campaigns and opens things up for a multiplayer experience unlike most others. Going online is just one of the many hybrid options available to players. You have the option to create a match with an assortment of local, online and computer controlled players. The option is also available to change the difficulty to match your experience with the game. In the online competitions you can make good use of the voice chat system and work your political skills to forge alliances or deceive your opponents for a hard backstabbing later and a higher place on the global leaderboards.
Greed Corp is a nice change of pace from what has been seen out of strategy game genre over the last few years. The world of Mistbound is new, fresh, and offers the possibilities for several new titles set in this world. The turn based gameplay is state of the art for the genre. The skill required to harvest the land and defeat your enemies without defeating yourself brings new life into the turn based genre and is one game that any strategy gamer will not want to miss out on.
